The gunboat Axel Thorsen and her twin, Skjon Walborg, were launched in 1810 and initially tasked with protecting merchant shipping from British attacks during the Napoleonic Wars. In the following years, the Axel Thorsen secured Norwegian territories in the Far North and played a key role in Arctic mapping programs. A unique chapter in her history was her service as a quarantine vessel during the cholera epidemic of 1831. Later, both ships gained fame for their participation in significant polar expeditions, including Adolf Nordenskiöld’s Svalbard expedition in 1864. After decades of service in seal and walrus hunting in Novaya Zemlya, the history of both vessels came to a tragic end in 1872, when they were crushed by pack ice and lost.
