The Elbe Highway (the lead vessel of the Type 8245 series built by the Gdynia Shipyard in Poland) was completed in 2005 for the Isle of Man-based shipping firm Ray Car Carriers. Operating as a Pure Car and Truck Carrier (PCTC), the ship was designed primarily to move factory-new vehicles across demanding short-sea shipping routes throughout the North Sea and Baltic waters.
Spanning eight vehicle decks, the 148-meter ship provides roll-on/roll-off space for over 2,100 passenger cars. Cargo operations are handled via a heavy stern ramp rated for 70 tonnes as well as a dedicated starboard quarter ramp. Equipped with an ice-strengthened hull (Finnish-Swedish Ice Class 1A) and a service speed of 19 knots, the vessel maintains year-round schedule reliability even under severe northern winter conditions.
