In 2008, the Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration (WSV) began preliminary work to replace the ferries used at 12 crossing points along the Kiel Canal (Nord-Ostsee-Kanal) since 1952. The dimensions—30.00 meters in length and 9.60 meters in width—were predetermined by the existing infrastructure.
A new feature, however, is the propulsion concept: two electric Voith Schneider Propellers are powered by batteries, which are charged either by onboard diesel generators or via shore-side power connections. Additionally, the ferries feature new locking hooks in the hull that allow the vessel to latch into specialized dolphins (mooring posts) upon docking. This allows the propulsion system to be switched off during loading and unloading, whereas older ferries must use engine power to hold their position at the pier. This measure alone is expected to reduce fuel consumption by at least 30%.
The shipyard Baltic Workboats S.A. in Estonia has so far delivered three ferries of this new generation. Christened in 2021 as the ARLAU, ALSTER, and STECKNITZ, they have been undergoing intensive testing ever since. The installation of shore power connections is scheduled to follow starting in mid-2024. If these are supplied with renewable energy, the ships will operate completely emission-free. If the concept proves successful, the remaining ferries will follow.
