The Furutaka, the lead ship of her class, marked a turning point in Japanese cruiser design upon her completion in 1926. By circumventing the tonnage restrictions of the Washington Naval Treaty, she combined maximum firepower with minimal displacement. Between 1937 and 1939, the vessel underwent extensive modernization to meet the demands of modern naval warfare. During this refit, the original six single turrets were replaced by three modern 20.3 cm twin turrets, and both the aircraft facilities and anti-aircraft armament were significantly strengthened. By 1941, the Furutaka was a formidable combat unit, forming the 6th Cruiser Division (Sentai 6) alongside her sister ship Kako and the vessels of the Aoba class. Her striking profile, featuring a characteristic S-shaped funnel and a massive bridge structure, made her one of the most elegant yet dangerous units of the Imperial Japanese Navy at the outbreak of the Pacific War. In late 1941, her primary mission was supporting Japanese invasions in the South Pacific, particularly during operations against Guam and Wake Island.
