Japanese Castle Ozu
Scale: 1/300
Skill Level: medium
Size (LxWxH): 150x134x105 mm (5x5x4 inch)
Ozu Castle, located in Ozu City, Ehime Prefecture, is the first wooden castle with a four-story main keep to be authentically restored in modern Japan. This 1/300-scale papercraft model faithfully captures the appearance of the restored structure as it stands today.
This paper model represents the reconstructed main keep of Ozu Castle and is rated somewhat difficult. Although the four-story, multi-tiered tower may seem large, its footprint is just seven by six bays—making it quite compact, similar to the towers of Maruoka and Kochi Castles. The tiered design is straightforward to build, but the many small decorative gables in the chidori hafu and karahafu styles require patience and attention to detail. The most challenging aspect is the railing on the second floor of the adjoining tower, where tweezers are a must.
Despite these difficulties, the model is suitable for motivated beginners. Anyone with experience building other models from this series should find no technical obstacles. Thanks to its balanced design, the tower has a striking appearance despite its small size.
