Ueda Castle, constructed by Masayuki Sanada in 1583, utilized the river terraces of Amagafuchi, a branch of the Chikuma River, and followed the Takeda-style castle construction method. Its fortifications proved formidable during the first siege by Tokugawa Ieyasu in 1585 and the second siege by Hidetada Tokugawa before the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600. Despite facing overwhelming forces, the castle emerged victorious on both occasions.

Following Ieyasu's victory in the Battle of Sekigahara, Masayuki and his son Yukimura were exiled to Mt. Koya, and Ueda Castle was completely demolished. Masayuki's eldest son, Nobuyuki Sanada, inherited his father's former territory, establishing the Ueda domain. Despite Nobuyuki's efforts to rebuild the castle and his application to the Tokugawa Shogunate for approval, the request was denied, and he was transferred to Matsushiro. It wasn't until 1622, when Tadamasa Sengoku assumed control of the castle on behalf of the Sanada clan, that reconstruction efforts began. However, construction was halted upon Tadamasa's death in 1628. Subsequent rulers from the Matsudaira clan made no further attempts to renovate the castle, leaving Ueda Castle unfinished until the end of the Edo period.
