Merkur and Vulkan were commissioned in 1913 as Loewer and Wendemuth by the shipping company Hapag in Hamburg. In 1922 they were taken over by Bugsier. Seven years later both tug boats were bought by NDL. They purchased these boats mainly to service their new passenger liners Bremen and Europa. In May 1934 Merkur was run over by the Albert Ballin and was totally destroyed. Vulkan was seized by the German navy in 1940. She would take part in operation Sea Lion. 1941 she ran on a mine in Le Havre and like her sister she was totally destroyed, too.
